This North Island region is known as Rotorua Lakes District and falls under the governance of the Rotorua Lakes Council. Spanning more than 2,000 square kilometres, the area highlights 18 magnificent lakes, collectively forming the Rotorua Lakes, where water enthusiasts can indulge in a plethora of activities, including swimming, fishing, boating, waterskiing, paddle boarding and various other water sports.
Among these lakes, Lake Rotorua reigns as the largest, while the charming Lake Tikitapu, lovingly known as Blue Lake for its enchanting hue, stands as the smallest of four lakes nestled between Lake Rotorua and Lake Tarawera. Lake Tarawera, distinguished as one of the deeper and larger lakes, coexists with Lake Rotomahana, the most recently formed natural lake in New Zealand and the deepest in the Rotorua district. Numerous other lakes in the region beckon exploration.
Shaped centuries ago by volcanic eruptions, the city of Rotorua and its adjoining Lake Rotorua are celebrated for their geothermal activity, featuring geysers and hot mud pools. Fondly referred to as "Sulphur City," Rotorua earned this nickname due to the distinct smell caused by hydrogen sulphide emissions.
Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand)- Lakes, formerly known as Lakes DHB, shoulders the responsibility for the majority of health services in the Lakes district. The district hosts two general hospitals (Rotorua and Taupō), along with continuing care facilities, mental health services, residential care facilities, pharmacies, GP practices, Māori providers, and primary health organisations.
Benefiting from its inland location, sheltered from winds, and blessed with a mild temperate climate, the region presents an excellent opportunity to integrate lifestyle seamlessly with professional life.
