Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island and has the country's second highest urban population, with nearly 400,000 people living here. Christchurch is in the Canterbury region and its hospital and health care is largely (but not only) provided by the Te Whatu Ora - Waitaha Canterbury (formerly Canterbury District Health Board).
Primary health care is the first point of contact with the medical sector for most of the region and provides services such as: ambulances, after hour surgeries, child health, dentists, disability services, hospices, men's health, mental health and women's health services (gynaecology and maternity).
Christchurch (the so-called Garden City) lies midway down the South Island's east coast. It is surrounded by beaches, hills and to the west, the Canterbury Plains. The River Avon flows through the city's centre and to the north, it is bordered by the Waimakariri River.
Christchurch offers its residents a relaxed pace of life and has many popular attractions for locals and visitors alike including: Cathedral Square, botanical gardens, wildlife parks, parks, art galleries, museums, arts centres and numerous recreational facilities.
